Under the supervision of the Mecosta County Sheriff and Undersheriff, performs varied secretarial and support functions for the administration of the office of the Mecosta County Sheriff.  Responsible for multiple tasks and assignments including but not limited to:
Accounting, Billing, Data Entry, LEIN Operations, Citation Coding, Civil Process, Sex Offender Registration, Firearm Permits, Filing, Court Bond Processing, Public Service and Phone operation, Visitation, Jail/Inmate accounts, Statistics, Freedom of Information Processing, Mortgage Foreclosures, Manage Supply Inventory and multiple other.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School graduation or equivalent with some advanced coursework in word processing and legal secretarial areas.
Must have at least one year of secretarial experience in a legal setting providing a knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures, including experience with software similar to that used in the office.
Must pass background check to be LEIN certified and have access to confidential records.
Starting pay: $18.15 to $21.48 pay range per hour depending upon experience.

CHILD SUPPORT INVESTIGATOR/MEDICAL ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

Under the supervision of the Friend of the Court, this role involves investigating and adhering to state guidelines to determine appropriate levels of child support and medical support.  Responsibilities include conducting interviews, gathering & analyzing data, preparing reports, and providing recommendations to the Court.  Additionally, this position enforces medical provisions outlined in court orders, including presenting cases during show cause hearings.  As mandated by law, conducts regular three-year case reviews.

Essential Functions

  • Based on income documentation, determines earnings to process through the State Guidelines Program, and investigates and prepares a report and recommendation for the court or referee to consider regarding child support adjustments or establishment.
  • Conducts three-year case reviews as required by law.  Collects and analyzes all relevant facts pertaining to childcare, income, and health coverage to establish the support amount in accordance with the child support formula.  Utilizes the State’s data warehouse and other enforcement tools to locate parents.  Prepare and submits support recommendation to modify the support order.
  • Addresses inquiries of clients, attorneys, and other agencies regarding assigned cases.  Interprets court orders for clients and explains the nature and requirements of such orders.  Responds to specific inquiries relating to health insurance and medical expenses.
  • Facilitates informal mediation with clients to attempt to resolve issues without formal court action.  Prepares orders based on agreements reached.
  • Conducts conciliation conferences to obtain temporary order regarding custody, parenting time, and child support.
  • Stays updated on new legislation, child support guidelines, and other relevant regulations.
  • Monitors case files for compliance with required health care provisions, enforcing medical provisions of court orders including insurance coverage and payment of health care expenses for dependent children.
  • Works with parties, employers, and insurance carriers to obtain health care information.  Serves as liaison with health care insurers and providers addressing insurance, billing, and claims issues.  Verifies insurance availability and costs within the Michigan Child Support Guidelines.
  • Enters data related to medical insurance and enforcement of medical provisions to the computer system.
  • Investigates complaints filed by the parties involving uninsured health care costs.  Meets with parties to explain obligations and attempt to resolve matters short of formal enforcement action.
  • Schedules hearings and presents cases and recommendations related to health care issues.  Prepares and processes orders as resulting from these hearings.

Employment Qualifications 

Education: Associate degree or equivalent coursework in human services and/or accounting. 

Experience: Two (2) years of experience with the court or legal system, accounting, and data processing systems.  Preference given to candidates with experience dealing with domestic relations matters.

THE 77TH DISTRICT COURT MAGISTRATE/COURT ADMINISTRATOR/DIRECTOR OF PROBATION - POSTING IS FOR OSCEOLA COUNTY

77th District Court Magistrate / Court Administrator / Director of Probation
Full-Time (Exempt)
Wage:  $28.46 - $30.17 per Hour DOQ (Level 13)

DESCRIPTION
:  Under the direction of the District Court Judge, serves as Court Administrator and manages all administrative functions of the court, including budgeting and financial administration, personnel and employee relations, case flow management, and other administrative areas.  Directs all staff responsible for bookkeeping, processing criminal, civil, and traffic cases, and fulfilling other court functions.  As Magistrate, serves in a quasi-judicial capacity as prescribed by statute, including issuance of misdemeanor and felony arrest warrants and search warrants, conducting misdemeanor and felony arraignments, setting and collecting bonds, accepting guilty pleas and sentencing misdemeanors as proscribed by statute, mediating small claims cases, and conducting hearings and adjudicating civil infractions.  As Director of Probation, manages and oversees probation employees; oversees all functions of the probation department, reviews and makes sentence recommendations on all cases. 
QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice or closely related field with coursework in the law providing a foundation for making determinations as to reasonable doubt, probable cause, and preponderance of evidence.  Five years of progressively more responsible experience in a legal setting which required knowledge and application state statutes related to the functions of a Magistrate.  Working knowledge of the principles and practices of District Court and District Court Probation.  Skill in assembling and analyzing data, preparing comprehensive and accurate reports and formulating policy and service recommendations.  Ability to assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations.  Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including Microsoft Suite applications, and the ability to master Judicial Information System (JIS) software and new technologies.  Able to become a certified LEIN user within six months.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  Must be a registered voter of Osceola or Mecosta County.  Must be able to obtain any and all certifications required by the Michigan Supreme Court to perform this job.  Position is appointed and serves at the discretion of the 77th District Court Judge.

ASSISTANT PROSECUTING ATTORNEY

Description: Under the supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney and the Chief Assistant, reviews and authorizes warrant requests for felony and misdemeanor cases, juvenile petitions, and mental health petitions.  Primary responsibility is for criminal prosecution in District Court and juvenile delinquency proceedings in Family Court.  May assist with other matters as assigned.

CORRECTIONS OFFICER

The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office is seeking to fill a full-time Correctional Officer position.  The successful candidate should possess solid leadership/supervisory skills, be a creative problem solver with sound judgment/critical thinking abilities and be able to work effectively under stressful situations.

Must also possess strong communication/interpersonal skills and be able to manage inmates of various ethnic/socio-economic backgrounds while monitoring their behavior within a secure environment.

Work Crew Supervisor
Under the supervision of the Director of Community Corrections, direct, oversee, and supervise community service clients to and from work projects. Prepare and supply written reports or statements as may be required by the Director. Prepare daily work log in detail.
Employment Qualifications:  
• Ability to effectively communicate with and supervise individuals who have broken the law, both misdemeanants and felons.
• Ability to independently carry out responsibilities with a work crew in remote locations throughout the county.
• Familiarity with the proper use and care of maintenance equipment, such as lawnmowers, trimmers, etc.
• Certified in FIRST AID and CPR upon hire or within one month of hire.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent with additional course work in social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, criminal justice, or related area preferred/ helpful, but not required.
Experience: Six months to one year of supervisory experience, with some criminal justice experience, preferred, but not required.
Work Schedule: Four days a week from 8:00am to 3:00pm
Starting Pay: $16.70
